Studies of Fortune 500 CEO’s found that the top executives relied upon quiet time and moments of prolonged inner reflection to help them make better decisions. The inner connection allowed them greater access to intuitive problem solving, which resulted in clearer thinking and more effective decision making.

Courage to Lead
Courage & Renewal for School Leaders is a multi-year, national initiative of the Center for Courage & Renewal. The goal is to help school leaders sustain and renew their passion, enthusiasm and commitment to school leadership and to the communities they serve through participation in Courage to Lead retreats. The focus of the initiative is on school leaders who serve the neediest learners. It is made possible by grants from the Rainwater Charitable Funds, The Angell Foundation and many local funders.
Participants have reported:
Development of new networks of support with other school leaders, counteracting the prevailing culture of overwork and isolation
-
Revitalized leadership that invites untapped potentials, passions, and talents of their faculty and students
-
Development of a personal capacity to cultivate the kind of trustworthy relationships required to create a positive school culture in which teachers and students flourish.

Courage to Lead: Seasonal Retreats for School Leaders
Professional Renewal Resources and The Center for Courage and Renewal are offering a program designed for leaders in education.
A cohort of leaders committed to personal and professional growth and renewal will gather for six seasonal retreats. The sessions focus on creating and maintaining a community of colleagues for mutual support and professional renewal.
In our large group, small group and solitary settings, leaders will explore personal and professional leadership qualities by making use of stories from their own journeys, reflection on experiences in their leadership or vocational setting, themes of the seasons, insights from poets, storytellers, and diverse wisdom traditions. Participants are invited to speak honestly about their lives and work and to listen and respond to each other-and to themselves-with compassion and encouragement.
The Seasonal Themes
Reflective Leadership
As school leaders we like to pretend that we are complete. If we are willing to drop that pretense, good things happen.
Living and Leading with Conflicting Demands
We will attend to the paradoxes of leadership including: failure and success, wise decisions and poor choices, courage and fear.
The Movement Model of Change
Included in the exploration will be Parker Palmer’s model of social change that begins with transformation of individuals who then come together to create systemic change.
Community and Abundance
We will explore the understanding that we are enough to do what needs to be done if we come together in teams, families and communities.
Dinner Meetings
Maintaining Professional Balance
Exploring Seeds of True Self
* The Rainwater Charitable Funds and the Angell Foundation are underwriting a significant portion of the series’ costs.
Keene State College or Antioch University of New England will award 3 graduate credit hours for series participants who choose this option.
